Optometrists evaluate people for glasses and contact lenses and can diagnose and treat some eye conditions. They are not medical doctors and do not perform surgery, but they can prescribe some medications. Some people may have vision insurance that covers visits to an optometrist and glasses and contacts, but often that vision insurance does not pay for visits to an Ophthalmologist. Additionally, people may have medical insurance, but that medical insurance does not pay for glasses and contacts. It can be very confusing who to go to for what and who will pay for what. Call and ask in advance. If you don’t, there will likely be problems.
