Nursing Homes Most Recently Inspected

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (“CMS”) is required to inspect each of the skilled nursing facilities that it oversees at least annually. These health inspections typically take several days to complete, are fairly comprehensive, and form the basis of the nursing homes 5-Star Quality Rating.

When conducting an inspection of a nursing home, surveyors interview residents, family members, and staff, and observe care being provided. They also review documents and records related to the care of residents. This allows them to get a complete picture of the quality of care being provided and identify any areas where improvements are needed.

Inspections typically result in a report that includes findings and recommendations for improvement. Nursing homes are required to correct any deficiencies identified during an inspection. Some infractions will require CMS to re-inspect the skilled nursing facility sooner than the typical annual review. Infractions usually will result in a decline in the nursing homes rating.

Results of inspections show up in two places, they show up directly on the nursing home’s health inspection scores and indirectly they are the basis for the nursing homes 5-star rating. All of this data is presented on the detail page for each of the nursing homes in our database.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and to help identify areas of concern. In the rating system each nursing home has a rating of between 1 and 5 stars in four categories, overall, staffing, quality, and health inspection. Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have above average quality and nursing homes with 1 star are considered to be below average.
